When it comes to any oral healthcare treatment, many people are often worried about the anticipated pain. You might be anxious about it yourself, especially when getting a dental crown. The tooth receiving it will need to be prepared, but will the process hurt? To help you feel more confident about this procedure, here’s what you should know and tips to relieve any discomfort you do feel.
So, Will Getting a Dental Crown Be Painful?
Before a crown can be placed, the affected structure will have enamel removed from all sides. This will help ensure your results blend in seamlessly and don’t look obvious. However, this is the portion that people often expect to be painful.
Thankfully, it may be easier than you think. Your dentist will numb your mouth with powerful local sedation, so you don’t feel much of anything. In fact, you may only have minor discomfort or experience pressure instead.
Once this part is done, you’ll have a temporary restoration bonded on while a dental lab makes your final one. It will take a couple of weeks to be ready, but you’ll get a second visit to have it placed when it is! If you are getting the CEREC same-day option, then you’ll get your permanent crown during that visit.
How Can I Ease Expected Soreness?
It’s expected that your mouth will feel a bit sore after you get both your short-lived and final restoration placed. This is normal, and you may notice it going away more as the days pass. However, there are ways you can relieve any tenderness sooner. Here are some tips to try out:
- Steer clear of sticky, hard, cold, and hot foods as they can cause sensitivity.
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe any inflammation.
- Take over-the-counter medication as needed, just follow the directions on the bottle.
- Brush your teeth with a soft-bristle toothbrush to remove bacteria that can lead to trouble.
Should I Call My Dentist About My Discomfort?
With all that said, some discomfort is expected, but there are some instances where it can be a sign that you need to visit your dentist. If you notice it’s not getting better or worsens, then having your provider take a look can be beneficial.
Not only that, if you spot any signs of infection (like redness and swelling) or have trouble biting and chewing with your crown, then your provider can double-check the fit to ensure it’s just right. That way, you can start enjoying your restored smile confidently.
