Without a doubt, our Worcester dental team takes a very orthodox approach to dental care; we’ll always try to save your teeth whenever possible. That said, there are times when a tooth or two can’t be saved or salvaged. If that’s the case, then we need to perform an extraction to protect you from worse outcomes. Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Again, our office (and all qualified dentists) view tooth extraction as a last resort. Therefore, we only recommend one for issues such as:

  • Extreme Tooth Damage or Decay
  • A Rapidly Spreading Tooth Infection
  • Very Overcrowded Teeth
  • A Stuck or Wedged “Baby” Tooth
  • An Impacted Wisdom Tooth

The Process of Removing a Tooth

If we determine that the only way to restore your healthy, happy smile is with an extraction, then that’s what we will do. First, we will numb your mouth thoroughly to ensure you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during your time in the treatment chair. Then, when you’re ready to begin, we will begin the process of removing the tooth. If it has broken through the gumline, then we will rock it loose until it’s ready to come out. If it’s trapped underneath, then we will create a small incision in the gums before removing the tooth section by section.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Once we’ve removed the tooth, we will tend to the extraction site and give you detailed aftercare instructions so you can continue to heal at home. A few general guidelines we recommend following include:

  • Changing the gauze pads as needed
  • Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site
  • Not smoking, using a straw, or spitting
  • Keeping your head elevated, even while you sleep
  • Eating only extremely soft foods, like seedless fruit smoothies
  • Not running or participating in any other strenuous physical activity
